How to change the Service Tag in a Dell Latitude D630 BIOS

Q: How to change the Service Tag in a Dell Latitude D630 BIOS

I have a Dell Latitude D630 and the motherboard died, It's out of warrenty so I bought a Motherboard on ebay. The Bios Service Tag does not match the number on the bottom so I would like to chage it to the correct one. How can I do this?

I read about a DST CD = Dell Service Technician CD that has this option but I can't find one.

It's not a real important thing but when I use the Dell System ID application it reads the Bios Service tag and not the real system tag that Is registered to me.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I updated the BIOS on my D600 to the latest version A16, last released 2005. Is a BIOS from the D630 released 2008 usable? They seem extremely similar.

A:Dell Latitude d630 BIOS usable on D600?

unless they are the same MB, I would seriously doubt that the BIOS are compatible. Also, are the bios not working on your current mobo? If they are working, there is no need to update.

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try ) http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109612-109.html#post747024

My laptop connected perfectly months ago to my home wireless network. Then my son borrowed it to game on and changed settings to connect to his pc as a monitor or something. When he gave it back, i can click and see my home wireless listed, however, when I click connect it will not connect. The only way I can connect is by connecting an ethernet. I am disabled so sitting on the floor is getting hard. Can anyone help me get back to wireless again?
Yes, the wireless switch is slid on, on the side.
Yes, i have rebooted.
I have tried to restore to a previous point, however it only shows 2 recent dates....
Thanks for your help in advance.

A:Dell Latitude D630

First you need to contact that son of yours and give him a bit of your mind after he tells you what he changed.
He should come back and undo those changes.

Can you see the network name being listed in the wireless drop down?
Or any network in the drop down listing?

A:Solved: Dell Latitude D630

Go to Control Panel - Power Options.

Since you have a laptop, there should be a setting that's associated with closing the lid.

Set it on "Do nothing", then apply the change, then restart the computer.

---------------------------------------------------------

You might also want to set the power scheme on "Always on" and set all the other settings on "Never" and turn off hibernation.

A:Concern of Upgrading RAM on Dell Latitude D630 (HELP)

hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!!

considering that your Lappy is windows XP, it may be time to consider a new PC rather than upgrading an unsupported XP machine. but i can definiltely understand not wanting to just de-commission a PC that should still run well with that Core2 in it.

RAM is a data hold area that is frequently accessed in a cache, to avoid hard drive accessing, which is considerably slower..everytime the PC is reset or powered down, the RAM resets and is ready for a new session to issue data to it for a temporary access channel. there are a number of options for you. you could consider a thorough backup of data on an external media and a windows 7 home premium 64 bit clean install which would wipe your hard drive clean. those windows licenses are around $100 though.  70gb hard disk space is plenty for a casual user that isn't storing massive media files and such. but most users  aren't comfortable with only around 50gb hard drive space free (windows x64 needs around 20gb itself and then needs another 10gb just to run in spec)

or, you could go with the windows 7 32 bit, which is fine also, and won't be so  demanding of resources like hard drive space and RAM. the 4gb RAM is  the maximum that can be read with a 32 bit OS system though and that is what you have so you will be fine there.

after a ram upgrade, XP alerts the user that the hardware is found and then asks for further configuration , at which time, it is best to go with the recommendations instead of digging a hole and throwing away the ladder (choosing options that the user later forgets and can't undo successfully).

the 3.99gb usable RAM reading is nothing to cause alarm, if it were 2.5gb usable or something, then we could dive right in and do some forensic analysis.

Upgrading from 2gb to 4gb with windows XP is a judgement call, my old xp machine hardly ever uses over 1.5gb so i never really cared to have more than that, but then if i ever did need it for a demanding software application, i would have it. the clock speed of your Core2 is really nothing to look for increasing, and i can explain why.  the higher the hertz, the higher the heat, which is NOT good in a laptop like yours or any other.

after everything i know so far, i think a windows 7 32 bit home premium clean install is the best way to go...and your Core2 CPU and 4gb RAM is worthy  of saving and will deliver plenty more years of enjoyable home computer use.

if the windows 7 license is a little over the cliff financially, the XP is still fine, but needs alot more maintenance and care now that it is out of support from the publisher (Microsoft). and considering that it is a dell OEM, you probalby have a restore feature built in that resets everything to factory defaults, you just need to get the massive Service Pack 3 file and keep it in a safe place on an external media if you ever need it. there is a topic here that covers just that, it should be right at the top of this XP forum

i would consider the options with what to do in order to keep the D630 useful if i had that kind of hardware.

ok, i think that is a great start, and again, welcome to BC!!

This refurb system I really like.  But I upgraded the ram to 4 gb and the system recognizes 4 gb.  But, it says only 1 gb is "available."  Why?  Is there a way to improve the amount of ram available?
I love the keyboard on this little system, my granddaughter is using for homeschooling.
Thanks.

A:Dell Latitude D630 usable ram? After upgrade?

The rest is being used by Windows or hardware inside the system - that's normal;  it means you have 25% of your memory available.
If the system has an integrated Intel GPU (likely, as most of the discrete nVidia ones are long dead due to a design fault by now), it's also using system memory for video purposes.

all right here is the story.

I just bought a 2gb stick of memory, and went to install it. all I got was a blue screen saying .......failed or whatever.

so I decide to try it in the primary memory slot, (located in different spot) so i take the keyboard out, and try it in there. still no go. replaced the old memory and booted it up (in the original state it was in)

no lights, no fan, nothing happens. I plugged the power cord in and I get 1 light telling me that it is getting power on my keyboard, but the power button still does not work.

so question is, do i need a new keyboard (maybe the wires got messed up for the keyboard) or is it my motherboard?

any tips would be GREAT!

thanks

I have a Dell Latitude D630 with a video problem. When booting the machine boots fine and displays the windows desktop. Soon afterwards you can hear a popping sound and the screen goes blank.

When you look at the screen with a flashlight you can see the icons and the desktop. I thought maybe it was an inverter problem. Got a new inverter and it still does the same thing.

This is a refurb. Dell laptop running windows 7.

Any suggestions?

Hello all,

I have an issue with this older laptop I would like to use more.

It appears that whenever I fresh install Windows 7 on it and leave it on overnight, it is off when I wake up in the morning. I don't know why it does this..

I don't believe it is overheating because I leave it on for several hours in the day and it stays on just fine, but when I go to bed it turns off. My power settings are for it to stay on all day as well, unless I prompt it to turn off. I do not have any viruses either as I've done a fresh install.

I have ran my diagnostic test and everything went fine and now I'm doing additional memory tests.

I'm totally lost here..

I am part of my companies IT department (Airline Services). Recently a member of staff has been having problems with their laptop.

The taskbar seems to freeze when opening applications , more noteably when opening email attachments in Outlook such as pdf files/excel etc. I cannot click on any desktop shortcuts or even go into the Start menu.

I have performed a full DELL diagnostic with no problems being found. I have done a full re-install and all the drivers are fully updated.

When the laptop freezes I can CTRL + ALT + DELETE and then click cancel when the task manager comes up and this seems to unfreeze the taskbar.

Any advice would be very helpful.

A:Dell Latitude D630 (IE7) - Taskbar Freezes

This may be caused by having mapped network drives that are disconnected. If you delete the disconnected mapped network drives, disconnect the working drives and then reconnect them, performance may improve. Also try this.

A:DVD RW Drive Dell Latitude D630 will not recognise blank dvd's

Most likely unrecognized media. Two choices: 1) update the drive firmware (if there is a newer version) 2) different brand/type of media. And use a quality media. For SL DVD, Verbatim or Taio Yuden, for DL DVD, Verbatim.

Got a Dell Latitude D630, problem is it displays multiple images of the same image. Machine infor: Processor-intel (R) core (TM) 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz, RAM-2.00GB, OS-32 bit win7 pro sp1, Bios D630 A12. NVIDIA driver installed.
Only comes good when doing self test and returns to displaying multiple images after using for 2 to 3 weeks.
Tried installing standard updated graphic drivers for dell, and nvidia a month ago, suspecting machine overheat I removed monitor and firmly refitted, cleaned fan and heat sink. The fault came up again a week ago. Any thing that I may have missed or shoul do.

My oldest teenage grandson is in need of a "cheap" laptop, so I bought him a refurbished Dell Latitude D630 from NEWEGG for $215.00 plus shipping.

It has a 14" display, an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 60 GB hard drive, a DVD/CDRW drive, and Windows XP Professional.

My decision to buy this laptop was based on Dell being more reliable than most other laptop brands - according to some members here.

Any input from the members here would be very much appreciated.

Anyone know any tricks?

Download and install the Vista (32/64 bit) drivers for you system from Dell's website. I chose not to install the application but only the driver and everything is working great.

I learned so much by the previously posted, expired, thread.

I am 52 and lame.... we're talking the lamest of lame in technology.

I'd like to buy an external webcam to my Dell D630 laptop so I can skype with my adorable great nieces and nephews.

How hard is it to buy a decent webcam, install drivers and run it on Windows XP? Please respond with your ages so I can make an intelligent decision... in other words, if you are 30 or younger, you are born knowing this stuff...

A:External webcam for a Dell Latitude D630... how difficult is it?

I also have a dell latitude d630 and if you want an external webcam logitech makes very good ones. And yes it will work with windows xp.Lets just say im way over 30. lol!!!!!Its not difficult at all. The webcam will come with a driver and you install it. The camera you just clip to the lid of the laptop and go from there.By the way what you see at the bottom of the computer isnt a camera but an ambient lighting sensor. When i first got my computer i thought that it was a camera but then again i figured it was in a strange place for it to be one.

Hi, when I try to use my latitude, the cursor and highlight are extremely erratic. When I try to enter the start menu, I can barely click on the right application because the highlight keeps rapidly switching from side to side and when I click it opens whatever was highlighted. I can't get into my System Properties because the tabs keep switching and as soon as I try to get back to the tab I want, it does a cycle through all the tabs. I can't use the arrow keys to control the highlight. Reinstalling the touchpad driver didn't help at all.

Thanks,
Noodles

Hello all,

I recently installed Windows 7 x64 onto my Dell Latitude D630 and found that the scrolling with the touchpad does not work at all. I have already downloaded and installed the Synaptics driver and nothing happened. I also downloaded R165804.exe directly from Dell's site and it came up with an error saying that 'the software does not work on your operating system. Click OK to exit.'

What now?

A:How to Enable Scrolling on Dell Latitude D630 Touchpad?

The Dell downloads do not show a touchpad driver for Vista 64 bit. Just the one you have which is listed for Vista 32 bit only.

Try installing that in a compatibility mode and see if that will help.

You can also post on the Dell laptop forum and maybe someone there will have something for you. Officially Dell does not support Win 7 on this model, although Vista drivers should work OK.

Hi,

I switched my Dell Latitude D630 on yesterday morning and the WiFi light wasn't lit, and I am unable to connect to any network. I'm completely baffled why this has happened. I was using it the previous night, streaming some music on Spotify, then I turned it off as normal, and when I tried using the internet the next day...nothing. The bluetooth light is lit as normal but the WiFi light stays off, and I've tried turning the external switch on/off to no avail.

Can anybody suggest what might be causing this, or any remedies?

Many thanks.

Hi everyone; I have a dell D630 that I started having problems with about 2 months ago, in the middle of normal functions vertical rows of small green bricks would appear, followed shortly by a crash. Then, I can power it back up but the screen will remain black. It lights up, the pixels are obviously functioning but it is black. Every once in a while it will work again but only for about 1-5 min and the green lines will come back.

This happened shortly after I had it outside during a construction project where it may have gotten some dust in it or something... I am guessing this is relevant?

I have tried blowing everything with a little keyboard cleaner air can, but that is all.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi bbblades222,
is that onboard video, or a card? the green lines, bricks, etc sound like an overheating problem, most likely vram. also you indicated that you had to recently move your machine, try re-seating your graphic card (if you have one) . and welcome to Techspot

1) Yes this is possible.
2) Yes this is also possible. I'm currently running windows 8 64bit. however you might have to install the windows 7 drivers occasionally as they keep getting replaced by windows -_-
3) not sure on that one. I have 2 in mine and it runs great with the ssd because of the pagefile.
SSD can handle petabytes of info, so they are in fact more reliable than hdd's. I've had a 120 gb ssd for 6 months now with 5 TB written to it, and I leave/use my pc 24/7 so I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you get a ssd with TRIM support (samsung 840 series are great!)

You will need to call Dell with two things:
1.  verification of ownership, and
2.  a credit card (the call won't be free of charge).
They will help you clear the password.

A:Dell Latitude E6330 BIOS PW

This is a tough one, That can be a problem with buying from Ebay is that if you don't have information of the original purchaser then any existing warranty may not transfer to you,  and tech support will not be able to offer any services, or even help with a BIOS password.  If you haven't already i suggest contacting tech support again and showing all the documents that you have to verify ownership.
This document goes over more on recovering hardware passwords.

I've had this Dell Latitude C400 for quite a while now, but recently I've noticed that the bus speed (which is usually 133 MHz) changes by itself to 33 MHz and doesn't change back unless you do a couple of reboots. I know that it's not the SpeedStep thing because that should make it run at 800 MHZ processing speed. It's labeled as a 1.2 GHZ CPU and currently it's running at around 193 MHZ according to CPU-Z. Dell says that it's my hard drive... don't know how that could affect the bus speed, but I guess it's because it's Dell. :haha: What could be the issue and how can I fix it other than replacing parts?

Here's the specs that it has:

Hi nbsp Latitude Can of it RAM? D630 8GB actually handle Laptop: Helping out a recent immigrant from China who came over with her son Before leaving from China the father of the son gave him a Latitude D a pretty nice one with the NVS M graphics chip The OS XP is in Chinese so its a real adventure trying to set up clean up the system Anyway I have a couple of questions about the D nbsp Seems like the system is capable of running Vista Bit but I beleive that is only worth it if the system has GB or more of RAM installed The current system has GB installed X GB and the owner would like to get a new OS for this system which will make my life a lot easier as it will at least be in english If she gets WIndows should she get Windows Bit or Bit She is willing to spring for more RAM so if WIndows Bit is the best way to go I will advise her to get X GB Module and leave the second slot open Latitude D630 Laptop: Can it actually handle 8GB of RAM? for more RAM Latitude D630 Laptop: Can it actually handle 8GB of RAM? later THe Dell manual indicates GB RAM capable does this mean it will take GB of RAM or that it may be able to take GB at some point in the future if they get around to updating the BIOS nbsp If anybody has used GB modules in this system please let me know which modules worked for you and even more importantly which didn t nbsp Kostas

A:Latitude D630 Laptop: Can it actually handle 8GB of RAM?

I can tell you from personal experience that Win 7 64 bit on a D630 (with a T7500 CPU) can handle 6GB RAM quite well. It came with 2X2GB SODIMMs and I replaced the bottom one (the easy one) immediately with a 4GB SODIMM.

I recently opened up the top to see what would be involved in swapping the T7500 for a T9500 and access to the top SODIMM is easy enough that I'm going to put a 4GB in there, too. I can't hurt, so when I go back in for the CPU swap, I'm going to do it.

If you haven't already done it, you really need to update the bios to A17. I think it was back around A13 or so that enabled more than 4GB, so uf that isn't done adding mire RAM won't do anything, and some users reported boot failure. A17 will fix it.

I have a Dell Latitude D630 and would like to get a Mogo x54 mouse for it.  I know the mouse works in an x54 card slot and I know that the D630 has a PC card slot and the manual says it will use express cards.  But I'm not sure if this mouse will actually work with it or not.  If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.

A:Can I use a Mogo x54 mouse with my Latitude D630?

These had either PCMCIA (aka PC Card) or ExpressCard sockets as optional at the time of purchase.  If your system has PC Card (PCMCIA) you cannot use the device you want.  If it has ExpressCard rather than PCMCIA, you can use it (assuming there's a driver for the device for the OS you're running).

WLAN at airports(or any other wireless hotspot) works with my Dell Studio 17 while the same fails to do so with my father's Latitude D630.But when i connect the Latitude directly to the Broadband modem through the network cable..internet works. Why is that so?The Network catcher can catch the available wireless networks but when i enter any website..it doesnt load.....and the bytes recieved in the network activity indicator is always zero!

Latitude Config:
C2D 1.8Ghz
1GB DDR 667
120GB 5400Rpm HDD
Intel PRO wireless 3945ABG Net

A:WLAN not working on Latitude D630

You might get a simple book or magazine on Wireless... or read a lot of stuff about it on the internet... There are a few simple, but important things you are missing... particularly about networking.
You might want to download the free version of Network Magic, then spend some significant time reading how things work.
The D630 is a decent unit that should give a lot of service. Just avoid passwording it.
I suspect your problem is simple security settings that are detected but not explained by your system.

A:laptop latitude D630 does not power on

Welcome to TSG

About a month ago I spilled something on my desk. A few days later my computer wouldn't turn on. When I stripped it down I realized that my MB smelled like what I had spilled. Guess it got in from the top fan opening. I now have a new MB.

My point is that the tea, probably did more damage than just the keyboard. Anything can be fixed. Is it worth it? Hard to say. Maybe someone else will comment on that

Trying to upload this E5530 bios. When thru detect drivers which shows
"Dell Latitude E5530 System BIOS, non-vPro supported (Broadcom TruManage)"A16 as the correct one. It reboots, doesn't display anything and then after I login a window pops up and says no changes were made. I've also tried A10, same thing. I didn't think about the fact that it's in a docking station until I'm just now typing this message. Could that be the issue? I'm not onsite today so can't check for a couple of days.

A:Dell Latitude D620 BIOS Password

Short answer: You need the original password.
That unit has been refurbished by a Dell-authorized shop (as all with the 595B are) so the restore discs cannot be used.
All of the suggestions your tried, are known not to work in that model... The D600 and D620 are the most difficult of all Dells to fix. You will likely need to replace the motherboard with one known to work. Most of the boards on eBay have the same problems you have.

Hi! :-)
On an A12 BIOS on my E7250, UEFI PXE booting doesn't appear in one-time boot menu and BIOS configuration (of course UEFI Network Stack and NIC w/PXE boot is enabled). After downgrading BIOS to A00, it magically comes back, but after updating back to A12 - it's gone again.
I've also tried A08, no option in here, so it was probably broken before.Legacy NIC boot works nicely and flawlessly.
Are there any Dell guys out here who could forward it to BIOS development team?

I've just added an SSD to my Latitude D630, and also put Windows 8.1 64-bit on it (still in evaluation mode). Ultimately, the intention is to move to Windows 10, but I can't do that until I actually purchase Windows 8.1.
When I start up, Wifi sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - maybe about 50-50. When it doesn't work, I can get it working by going into Network Connections and disabling - re-enabling WiFi.
I've updated the BIOS to A19. I can't install any of the Dell drivers for D630, as they don't support Windows 8. Device Manager indicates "Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN" for the name of the network adapter, and driver version 13.3.0.137.
Any idea why this might be happening, and what I could do about it?
Thanks - Calum

A:Latitude D630, Windows 8.1 - WiFi not always working

 calumm,
Unfortunately, you will be needing the Windows 8.1  Wifi and Network card drivers for this computer. You also may need other Windows 8.1 drivers. Dell does not have any Windows 8.1 drivers available for the Latitude D630 Notebook. You can click the link below and view some of the YouTube videos on wifi issues in Windows 8.1 that may help resolve the wifi issue.

Hello,
I desperately need a Bios Dump of an Dell E6430 Version A18, as somehow it is impossible to update the Bios (currently it is A14). I have some problems with networking when using a docking station I hope to solve with this..Please no advice how to update Bios, I already tried everything(!). The Laptop does just a reboot instead of flashing the update.
I can create a dump of A14 from Windows using Intels FPTW (64bit Version) without a problem, so I hope it will work with A18 as well.At least using Windows 7 Pro 64bit with Adminstrator account. If anybody with an E6430 and A18 could just create a dump (just click "dump.bat") and upload it here it would really make me happy.

With best regards
André
