Preferred Solution: Help about my computer.. My computer keeps on shutting down when im installing/uninstalling

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello I came across this forum via searching for fixes to this on Google but could not IE8, computer from installing and my random programs have been images Since uninstalling find anything Since installing IE8, random images and programs have been uninstalling from my computer Here is my problem A month ago I decided to finally upgrade Internet Explorer from to via the Windows Update utility After doing so my AOL Instant Messager an old version was automatically uninstalled and all related files except the intial setup file were deleted I thought no big deal and reinstalled it since I still had the setup file However after every restart which was required from another Windows update it would remove AIM again prompting me to reinstall it again I also use the Aimutation addon for it So last time I decided to install it in the quot C Program Files quot folder rather than this custom folder quot C AOL Tools quot which I had it installed in previously Since then it has not been automatically uninstalled so it seems fixed However also in the C AOL Tools folder I had various images conversation logs and saved buddy list settings stored With each restart after an update random images and files in the folder and its subfolders are deleted All of the logs have been deleted It seems like the oldest images are the only ones that have not been deleted yet Fortuntately I have and always had everything backed up on an external hard drive However it has become an annoynce that image and other files in this AOL Tools folder keep getting deleted So I ve decided to move every file that was previously in that folder all images and video files out of the folder and into other folders However now I fear that this potential virus will start attacking other folders such as my music or gaming data Has anyone heard anything about a virus like this or a problem with IE and or Windows Update uninstalling removing random files on one s computer Some other info - I live by myself and am the only user of my computer So it s not the result of anyone else messing with it It s a Dell XPS and has Windows XP Media Edition - I ve run full scans with Spybot Search amp Destroy Symantec Anti-Virus and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and nothing was detected Hope someone can help

A:Since installing IE8, random images and programs have been uninstalling from my computer

If the AOL program is the only one affected...I would uninstall it and reinstall. It would seem to be damaged.

Older versions of programs such as you mention...tend to evolve because of noted vulnerabilities in the older versions. You might check the AOL website for more info on such.

I just got a new ABIT motherboard, AMD Athlon XP 2900, 400 wat power supply, 256 mb ram stick. I put that all into my new case, and I used my fairly new 250 GB Maxtor HD. I formatted the hard drive. When i go to install XP, it loads everything, than it says starting windows install or something. When it says that, it just shuts off. I know it's not the power supply, I just bought it. And i'm sure it's not the CPU fan, cause that's new too, and it's made for the AMD Athlon XP 3000, which is more than i actually need. I've been having this problem for a long time now, and I want to use my new computer already. So can anyone help me?

My OS is Win98. When I'm trying to upgrade this to WIN XP, or trying to install some other softwares like Visual Studio... during the installation time, the computer will go off. First I thought, It's because of some virus. And I repartioned my hard disk, but the problem persist. Pls help me.

A:Computer shutting down when installing

Absolutley make sure you are not connected to the internet when installing windows. Try to get all the patches and such on a cd. That being said, WinXP is most likely not liking some part of your hardware. If you have ad on cards, remove everything except the video card and RAM. Then give it a whirl.

Now that i reread your post and see it happens during any install, you may have bad RAM, or have spyware.

A:After installing driver computer keeps shutting down, please help me x

So, it isn't just turning off when the screen goes off, it's locking up and you have to completely kill the power to get it to be able to restart? Are there any conflicts in device manager? Go to start, run, type devmgmt.msc, press enter, and look for exclamation points or question marks. If there are any post what they are.

A:First build: Computer shutting off while installing XP

Does sound like a ram issue, but I'm concerned about the manual setting.

You may wish to download your M/B manual and confirm if there aren't any other switches on the M/b to set.

You can also use Memtest to check your existing Ram (bootable CD)

I just installed new hardware and also windows - note i was on xp before and win is a fresh installing hardware and Computer shutting after down new 'clicking' install moving to bit with my new fx processor Now there are so many factors involved its hard to narrow down what the issue could be since i have upgraded ram OS mobo new hard drive and new graphics card oh and i bought a new dvd drive today since i had to get the drivers for network off it I will try and provide short notes of what ive done- -Last night installed hardware installed win played Computer 'clicking' and shutting down after installing new hardware around on comp for mins or so no crashes then turned it off myself thinking everything is good -This morning bought dvd drive and installed Also cos temps were idling in mid s thought artic sivler thermal paste might be better then stock stuff so changed that -here begin my problems -After I put thermal paste on booted up and a few seconds after in win computer 'clicks' and turns itself off -Im now terrified of what ive done cursing myself for not being happy with stock paste -When I look under heatsink see ive WAYYYYY overdone it on paste and its dripping down the sides of the cpu I Computer 'clicking' and shutting down after installing new hardware figure Ive quite potentially just screwed my cpu if the arctic silver is causing conduction and short circuiting -now here I am unsure because i dont know whether it was just fluke that the computer didnt crash last night and the problem was there but jsut latent if it was related to me changing the paste So I took the cpu out and slowly and very carefully cleaned everything off One thing tho is while wiping i got some TINY amounts which have gone over and rubbed a little between the pins Can this cause damage They werent there before and my rubbing did it but it hasnt made things any worse so far Im only tlaking miniscule amounts but probably enough to cause a current from one pin to another well i just read up that arctic silver apparently doesnt conduct electricity so hopefully im ok there Anyhow i reapply a more reasonable amount and boot back up and same deal By the way I dont think its an overheating issue either because ive been carefully monitoring temps in bios and they were still in the s after i boot back up as fast as i can after a crash Also ive done some other tests below So Im still thinking my cpu might be screwed until I run some more tests which maybe makes me think otherwise I can stay in the BIOS no probs and no crashing Im not too sure about anything else but I think ive run a cpl of other boot disks which arent windows and no crash such as pebuilder based macruim boot cd Also I have been able to get into windows safe mode no probs which is how im typing this Also to test my cpu I ran a 'heavy load' program to stress the cpu to test it out properly I left it on for around - mins with all cores at and didnt crash or show any issues So that was kind of reassuring Also when i immediately reset to bios the temps showed i think The problem happens as soon as I go into win normal mode within about seconds itll just click and shut off At the moment I also havent been able to reinstall or indeed run another windows install I tried to run my win xp disk but at the end of loading it comes up with an error message saying it cant continue cos of some hardware issue That has me worried again that its hardware based Im confused tho since weirdly win safe mode seems very solid Also I dont know how to reinstall win because for some reason the boot usb wont work now i have a windows installed on hard drive i have usb as st boot but regardless it ignores it and goes to the windows boot I cant format this one as i had thought to with win xp cos i couldnt get in and if i unplug it i cant get past post and obv coulnt boot win even in setup Ive also tried removing all the other things and re-adding them one by one and each time its still giving this shutdown So what s... A:Computer 'clicking' and shutting down after installing new hardware

Please describe what you mean by clicking.

CPUs don't ever make a noise, however if you have got artic silver on the pins or in the socket then there is potential for damage but 90% iso propyl alcohol will clean it off and should leave no damage unless its been very bad.

Too much paste can be worse than no paste as it insulates the heat.

Downgrading involves more than just a format, check your BIOS and see if the USB ports are working and that they are enabled.

Please post your full specs including make and model of power supply.

Not sure on the stock fan speed but 3200 should be fast enough, I never use stock fans but thats because I overclock my current cpu cooler fan doesn't go above 1290rpm.

Hi, so today I unplugged my computer while it was still running by accident. Now it wont start at all, no lights, no fans, nothing. I am concerned that it may be a problem with my power supply (maybe fried it or something). And no its not a problem with the cord (I tried a different one), its not a problem with the power switch (the one that you switch to either circle or line) because I tried it both ways. However recently my computers power button stopped working so my brother hooked up an old keyboard to my computer so to start it I will press a key on that keyboard and it will start up my computer, so I have to keyboards one to start the computer up and one to type. So in summary im not really sure what the problem is but im 90% sure it has something to do with either my "power keyboard" of my Power Supply so yeah. Any help will be apreciated

Try and get a psu off a friend who might have a extra one. Go from there. This way you might be able to narrow it down. It really hard to say what happen .

Lets say that i downloaded a pdf file. If i put that file on to the desktop it will be there. But when you restart your computer or shut down your computer, you log back on and its not there. If i download poweriso, i install it into c: drive and it will work. But when you turn the computer off or reboot it, you log back on and its not thereI know its not a virus. Its like a school computer you can only save it into your drive. If you save it into a desktop it wont be thereI think someone put a system restore or a default. so when you turn it off it will reset it to the what you had when you turned it onI have a dell computer running windows 10

A:Computer wont save anything after shutting down computer or restarting

Was this system ever joined to a corporate or a school network? It might be a group policy that is making your user profile act this way.

I was using my microsoft office word program, and it all of a sudden went funky, like short circuiting out, then a blue screen popped up saying that the program I was using was bad and causing my computer to crash, so my computer was shutting down before it crashed. Then it shut down and came back up asking if I wanted to go back to a restored or previous thing, something like that, (a restore point), and it said it would probably turn off and on several times through out and could take several minutes, then the computer turned off and back on and the screen would not turn on... I have a dell all in one computer, so I do not have a separate tower from my monitor. What happened? How can I fix this? Any one out there have any ideas? I was not even on the internet at the time.

A:Got a bad program, shutting down computer before computer crashes... help

When you first turn it on, can you see the Dell logo?  If so, does it show the Windows logo after that?
Do you recall details of what the blue screen said?

If you can see the Dell logo, then try these free, bootable diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html
You can press F12 to get to the boot menu in order to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

My computer is an XP home edition I believe, and it asked me to install some important updated. After doing so, it told me that I needed to restart or shut down my system in order for the updates to take place. When I tired doing so, It gets stuck. I get to a blue "log-off" screen, and it says 6 out of 14 updates are being installed... do not turn off your computer. But it stays like that for hours, and never updates, so I end up having to shut off my computer by hitting the power button. :/

I tried doing a system restore, but those updates have to be installed first. Before it even tries to restore, it deals with the updates. I'm not too sure what to do. Is there any way to bypass these updates, or get them installed some other way? I'd really apriciate the help. Thanks.

A:Updates for my computer are preventing me from shutting down my computer

Is this a new system? When you go to updates have you validated your copy of XP with Microsoft? Once you do that and make sure your settings are correct in your browser for downloads it does take time but not hours. Are you running firewalls, Zone Alarm etc., anything that would block the updates? Jazz

Hi, there is a red light next to my power button that blink's alot & i believe it's called the hdd light. No matter what i'm doing it shut's off after awhile & than my computer freeze's & i don't know why. Everything work's fine into that happen's & it's alway's random. I only had this computer for 2 years & i built it myself & this problem just started 2 days ago i also did memtest but it partially freeze's meaning the upper right corner isn't moving but the mid right corner still has number''s moving. This is my system specs

geforce gtx 660
intel core i5-3570k
corsair cx 600
ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Onboard gpu intel (R) 4000

A:Hdd light on my computer keep's shutting off than my computer freezes

The hdd light should only light while the disk is being read or written to. It is normal for the hdd light to not be on all the time.

Since you say the system "partially" freezes during a memtest, I would like to understand more about that. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when it's partially frozen?

Ok so Ill try to make a long story short... Fiance tried to install windows 7 and the computer wouldn't read the disc (we know it works, since it's been installed on a family computer) he uninstalled the CD-Rom and restarted, now it turns on but loads to a black screen & doesnt do anything. Tried safe mode and loaded to log in screen but couldn't use mouse or keyboard. Anyone know what went wrong or how we can fix this? He is using windows XP...thanks in advance for any help..

A:Computer won't start after uninstalling CD-Rom

Safemode was probably your best bet. If you are using a USB keyboard and mouse, Safemode may not reconize them if you need any special drivers. Do you have a PS/2 keyboard/mouse, or any of the USB to PS/2 adapters. If so try them, see if you can get into system restore and bring the computer back a few days.

So I have recently bought a Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB ssd drive. My HP computer now has a 1TB hitachi hard drive and a ssd drive. The computer loads from the SSD drive. To try and maintain space, I have tried to download MS Office on the HDD. But when I install office, while in the middle of installing, my computer always crashes. This has happened on all three of my attempts to install office so far. Is there any reason why I should not be able to install office on the HDD or do I have to install it on the SSD?

Thanks in advance for the help!

A:Computer crashes while installing MS Office on a Computer with 2 drive

It's always best to have your programs loaded onto the Windows drive, which in your case is the Samsung SSD.

It would be best if you could supply a screen shot of Disc Management making sure it covers all discs & the information. This will show if you have any other problems.

This tutorial shows how to do a screen shot.

My computer has been getting BSOD problem related to intel rapid storage, so i ended up uninstalling the driver and i think i also uninstalled the chipset driver. Now, my computer cant boot.
Any idea how to fix this?

A:My computer can't boot after uninstalling chipset driver

That is a common error with Windows 8.x I am guessing that Windows Vista or 7 was previously installed on the machine. As for fixing it, can you get into Safe mode? Have you checked your laptop mfg's website, to see if they have an updated version of the driver?

Some days ago I installed 'eSnips' for download something. After that, my homepage set to eSnips. I then changed it to my desired page. When I restarted my browser, it(eSnips) came back again. Then I did the fixing again, but no result. Then I uninstalled eSnips, even removed all files and folders containing eSnips, but alas! still no result. :(

I even downloaded a software to remove eSnips, but it failed too. I searched at Google, but no satisfactory solution was there. But this software is getting disgusting day by day for me. And it's degrading my PERSONAL LIBERTY. It's imposing on me!

Please give me the exact and effective solution.

Thanks in advance,
Oridroo

In Firefox, go to Tools>Addons>Extensions and, if you see anything for eSnips there, remove/uninstall it. Restart Firefox.

If you still can't change your homepage back. Let me know. There are deeper settings we can work with.

Ouch, I feel your pain.  Unfortunately XP has gone unsupported by MS since 4/8, so it's just going to become increasingly vulnerable to malware.  I take it you don't have your system backed up on an external hard drive either.  I think what I'd do in this situation would be to back up any data I didn't want to lose, then spend $100 or so for a Windows 7 or 8 install disc, and make the switch to a current supported system.  Personally I'd go with Windows 8 and use the free Classic Start with it to make it look and feel like earlier versions of Windows.
I have to add that a lot of XP users are going to Linux; mint and ubuntu are two versions (distros) you might want to investigate.

When you've gotten your system back like you want it, I urge you to get yourself an external hard drive and a good 3rd party backup program. You can set it up to do everything automagically at the time and frequency of your choice. 1 TB external hard drives are about $60 these days and a really good FREE backup program is the Easeus Todo Backup Free.  That can save you a lot of time and frustration the next time something like this happens. Sooner or later it happens to all computers for one reason or another.

 Good luck.

After uninstalling a program from the computer is it ok to remove leftovers from windows Prefetch?...I dont want to clear all that is in prefetch just the INSTALL PF File for a program i dumped...keeping in mind I uninstalled program from control panel add and remove then I delete folders and install files as well after the uninstall however when I do a search on my computer in files and folders you can see there is still a bit left over in prefetch...I want to get rid of it if I can...thanks.

A:After Uninstalling Computer Is It Ok To Remove Leftovers From Windows Prefetch?

An interesting question.

I've never tried deleting single files from the Prefetch folder. As you probably know, some people suggest deleting everything in the Prefetch folder periodically in order to boost performance (but such claims may be dubious.)

In my opinion, it shouldn't be a problem, though you may want to simply move the file in question to another folder until you know that it doesn't break anything then delete it later.

I'm wondering, though. What's so horrible about this program you uninstalled that you're trying to erase all traces of it? Was it infected?

Welcome to the forum. These error messages are somewhat difficult to troubleshoot, as you will see if you look at http://aumha.org/a/stop.htmScroll down to the section dealing with STOP: 0x0000008E, please. What I would do when I receive that message (I have received it) is: a. Check Event Viewer for corresponding errors/clues that might help. b. Check to see that my system is not overheating and blow out the insides with canned air. c. Reseat each memory module (take it out, put it back in the slot properly) and blow out the modules with canned air while modules are out. d. Try to recall any change of drivers/hardware that might be related.Troubleshooting these error messages is a process of trial-and-error, eliminating suspects one by one, in order to hopefully arrive at a solution. One other thing you might do is to make sure that all hardware devices are functioning properly, just in case it is a driver issue. I hasten to add that hardware items are not the only ones using drivers, since your firewall, your AV, music/video editors, etc. all use drivers. The drivers on any of these can become corrupt and create problems.Louis

Hi

My computer shut down the other day when i clicked on IE. Since then it loads up and then just shuts itself off.
If i start it normally i can get to the dektop screen and then after 30 seconds it shuts down.
If i start in safe mode it will load up fine, but as soon as i try to do anything like run a virus scan or any programme it just shuts down again.
I've even tried to re install XP. But when i boot from disc, it goes through the blue screens as if i'm doing a fresh install and then......you guessed it, it shuts down again. Its not like it's even getting to a certain point. It can shut down at any point up to formatting the hard drive.
My guess is that i may need a new power supply??

Any advide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

A:computer keeps shutting down

If it just shuts off and there is no restart or blue screen error you are probably right on with the power supply.
The only way you can really test it is to try a known working PSU in the machine and see if it all works.

Just one thing have a look at the fan on the CPU and the heat sink to make sure its not covered in dust. It could be an over heating issue.

Also read this post i got help with regard to buying PSU's

Okay my computer was shutting down without warning. I tried running my virus scan which found nothing so went about my business (playing farmville). Well finally it shut down this morning in SAFE mode. I was trying to get my files on my passport before it totally died.

Now, it won't even boot up off my knoppix CD, which i thought was reallly weird.

I can't access anything long enough to get a HJT log. Please help me!

I'm running windows Vista home premium . I don't remember the specs, but I bought it in 2007 and it was close to top of the line Gateway.

Thanks in advance

A:Computer keeps shutting down

I was able to restart and it went to something called startup repair, and it recommended system restore, which it's doing right now....not sure if this will fix anything, but if I can get the files you require I will do that first.

A:my computer keeps shutting down

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you do the following:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or

Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed

with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
Double-

click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates".

(If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from

here.)
Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before

scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the

main menu.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the

Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

Click Close to exit the program.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Is it possible I have picked up a virus.
Why does it settle down by lunch time GMT

A:Computer not shutting down Please help

I haven't got a solution, but here is something that you can do to fix it temporarily.

Go to Notepad.
Type in shutdown -c
go to save as, at the bottom click on all files. Save it as shutdown.bat

Save it to your desktop, and put it in the corner where you can access it quickly. Now whenever you want to shut down, just double click that file.

Also, if you don't like the look of it, put it in your my documents and make a shortcut to it, then you can change the icon.

Hope this helps :)

I'll be lucky if I can get this posted before it happens again. My machine just shuts off regularly after a few minutes of being on. Every startup it goes through scan disk, sets up fine afterward, but then shuts off whether I'm working, it's on lock, etc... Where do I start?

It won't stay on long enough to run malwarebytes, spybot, etc.

Help! Thanks!!!

I read in the help section of my laptop that I shouldn't shut down my computer unless I am repairing hardware or something. It said you should always put the computer on sleep even if you are not going to be using it for hours.

Is this true? I always thought you should shut the computer down. Doesn't this waste the battery/electricity?

Thanks!

High temp CPU search the web for the regular temp setting and then compare the temp in the bios see if it's getting too hot.

Alright here s the deal My initial problem involved attempting down. Computer shutting to play games specifically Ragnarok Online though any game beyond Solitaire suffered the same fate These games would run for five to ten minutes and then the computer would reboot My initial response was quot Heat quot So I added another fan didn t help So I removed the side cover of the case Still didn t help Furthermore I did some quot testing quot used my hand to feel the heat and the temperatures varied from burning me to barely any at all So I ve dropped that avenue Computer shutting down. of investigation My next thought after some research was the Computer shutting down. video card I was using Computer shutting down. onboard video to play these games so I thought maybe that was overtaxing the system So I finally bought a Radeon PCI mobo only supports PCI but that didn t make the slightest bit of difference Upon more research thinking about it myself I settled upon my RAM as the perpetrator I ran a few memory tests all of which came back negative for any problems however I wasn t convinced I was only running one stick of DDR perhaps THAT was overtaxing it since is suggested for RO So I returned the video card I m poor and bought a new stick of DDR Didn t help in fact it appears to have gotten worse which is where I m at now Now the computer shuts down after about five or ten minutes of doing ANYTHING after it shuts down it ll only come on for about twenty seconds unless I let it rest for about twenty minutes or so I tried taking out the old stick of RAM I tried it with both sticks I tried it with ONLY the old stick Nothing is helping My newest suspect after reading a post here is the PSU or God forbid the mobo Help Please gt lt nbsp

I had posted a topic on this a few weeks ago. Someone helped me and I thought the problem was fixed so I didn't update the thread for a few days to make sure the problem was gone. The problem returned, and I posted a comment on the open thread and got no reply so I am reposting it.

My computer will shut down at various times. No error message or anything, it just completely powers down as though I pulled the plug. Do I have some kind of virus? Please help.

A:Need help with computer shutting down

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Sorry for not being able to have replied to your topic earlier. If you still need help, please start a new thread and post a fresh set of logs requested in our pre-posting process outlined below, as it has been quite a while since you posted:

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

If you're still unable to run GMER, download this special version of GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... Sections
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Hi. So I've been having a recurring problem for a few months. Every few weeks, my computer would just shut itself off. At first it was only during games where I'd be using a lot of system resources, but more recently (like, today) it's been doing it when I have nothing running. It gives no error message, it just turns off.

Additional weird information: If I turn it on within about 3 minutes after it shuts itself off, it'll start to boot up for about 5 seconds and then turn back off. Then I can boot it up the next time. During this boot up, it makes me go into the bios and set the memory frequency.

I'm really confused and just wanted to see if you guys have any ideas. Thanks.

A:Computer just shutting itself off..

It is entirely possible that your power supply is going out. If that is the case, then it is also a fire hazard, so be careful.

I am using windows xp and i started having problems a few weeks ago
my computer shuts down everytime i am using it. I turn computer on, and I am fine for about 15 minutes to an hour then it just turns off. I am not sure how to fix it

A:computer keeps shutting off

The first thing you should do is pull the side panel off the case and look to see if all the fans are running. Then check for accumilations of dust on the fan/heatsink. If the PC hasn't been cleaned out lately, now would be a good time.

I am trying to fix a computer for my girlfriend s mother so she can have a family computer in her living room so her family Keeps Down Own Shutting On Computer Its will stay off of hers but that s beside the point Anyway the computer I am trying to fix is a Dell desktop not completely Computer Keeps Shutting Down On Its Own sure the model of it at the moment although if it is required I can find out When trying to start the computer up it used to say disk read error or something to that degree I shut off all of the disk drives in the system setup and what do you know the computer started right up into Windows Vista However it randomly shuts off it was doing this from the beginning before I could get it to boot into Vista I have since deleted the partition and am trying to install Vista from scratch like I was intending to do however I cannot complete the installation before it turns off during the installation process Any suggestions My thought is it is an overheating issue but it could be something so simple to fix that I have been overlooking it nbsp

I recently installed some more RAM into my computer but after the install the monitor stopped working I made sure everything was in place and rebooted four or five times but all I got was the monitor configuration even though I couldn't change anything The computer and monitor were both on and running but the screen was all black except for the blue monitor configuration in the middle which would not go away This only occurred when I tried turning them both on at the same time When the monitor was already on amber light and then keeps shutting off Computer I attempted to boot the computer the light would not turn green and the monitor would stay off I took the RAM out and everything was working perfectly on the first try However about fifteen minutes later my computer just completely shut off I rebooted XP said the system had recovered from a serious error and before I had much time to do anything about it Computer keeps shutting off the system shut off again I continued to reboot the machine but it seemed as though the system would shut off sooner and sooner with each reboot I tried to look in the BIOS for information and tried LastKnownGood as well as Safe Mode but the computer would either just shut off after getting to the XP logo long before ever reaching the logon screen or reset itself and then shut off shortly after I checked to make sure everything was in place several times both internally and externally and everything appears to be okay Any ideas I have a lot of valuable files on one of the accounts that I'd rather not lose I was also thinking about using another computer on the network to access that account but I'm not really sure how and I think it only applies to systems that already have Remote Access Client enabled If the computer I'm trying to access is turned off and refuses to turn on is there a way to access one of its accounts without using the computer itself Edit For what it's worth every now and then there would be an error message that popped up just before the computer shut off It appeared so fast that I didn't have time to read it but one of them mentioned insufficient virtual memory Though I can't be sure what the other error messages said I'm pretty certain that they were different errors each time

A:Computer keeps shutting off

This sound like to completely different problems. 9 times out of 10 when a computer keeps shuting down and rebooting it is more than likely the power supply failing. If you have an extra one lying around I would give it a try.

Now as far as the RAM goes I am not really sure what would cause that other than a bad stick. Was the stick new and did you ground yourself prior to handling it?

And lastly the error about system memory be low means you computer is running more processes than it can handle. First watch you post and make sure you compture is reading the installed RAM correctly. It may be possible you jared the old stick lose when to removed the new one. I would not hurt to use a Norton or of anti-virus boot disk to search for viruses.

A:Computer is shutting down

Hello and Welcome to TSF

First try booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key at boot. If no success place the windows cd in the cdrom and try booting from the cd. You may have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS first.
Also if you have a ps2 keyboard and mouse lying around try using those instead of the wireless till you get it up and running again

Hi .Step One: Disable Auto Reboot On System Crash - http://www.theeldergeek.com/auto_reboot_on_system_crash.htm Step Two: On next crash, write down printed content of error message, exactly as it appears onscreen.Step Three: Post content here and someone will try to advise you concerning what is happening, why, and how to try to overcome it.The other obvious possibility is overheating due to poor air circulation. Make sure that your system fans (1 for CPU, 1 for power supply, at the minimum) are spinning properly and check your system for dust/dirt accumulation.Cleaning A Laptop Computer - http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/usingyour...cleanlaptop.htm Cleaning the Interior of your PC - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/cleaning-the-inside-of-your-pc/ System manufacturer and model might be useful info.Louis

I've seen this a couple times before. All with varying causes. The first thing I would check is the motherboard BIOS battery. They are usually very simple and cheap to replace. If replacing the battery doesn't work you may want to try the FIXMBR command in the Windows XP Boot CD recovery console.

Hi, I have a barebones kit computer that I put together approximately two years ago. Since then I've had to purchase new memory and now a new hard drive due to it going bad.  I just bought a brand new hard drive a WD 1TB 7200 64mb SATA. After installing it, the computer kept shutting down on me until I updated the buffer speed in the bios and that seemed to cure the problem for the time being. Now it is doing the same thing, shutting down on me right in the middle of me doing things on it. Any one know what I am missing here?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Overheating?

Go to Start->Run, type ChkDsk /r and click Ok.

A MSDOS Window will appear to ask you if you want to run this utility at startup. Select Yes. Restart the computer.

Sounds like you have a virus infection but I'm not entirely sure. Try downloading HijakThis and posting the log in Malware Removal and HJT Logs and ask someone to take a look.

Hey

I have a few problems actually, the main one that concerns me is that my laptop has recently been switching off without any warning. Upon restarting it says it overhearted which may be due to the battery or the vents not working properly. I've tried clearing the vents but that hasn't worked, is there anything else you can suggest, or would it be worth me buying a new battery?

The second problem is just that my laptop runs really slow, particularly when i start it up. Any suggestions on what I could do to try and speed it up.

Finally I managed to delete my recycling bin on the desktop and I can't get it back, so I can't either empty it or retrieve something from it. Do you know where I would be able to do this?

Thanks a lot

It just shuts down as if you had pulled the plug? My top suspect is the power supply, but overheating or a memory defect could also be causes. Any hints in the Event viewer?

Is this a laptop or desktop?

What do you mean by a PSU "running"?

My computer (A Velocity Micro Prosonix running Vista) has been turning it self off recently, and specifically during games like WoW or Steam Games.

I've read that this may be a PSU issue, but I want to be sure before I go buy a new one.

I have recently reformatted my hard drive (about a week ago)

I also do not believe it is an issue of overheating as I have tried taking the side panel off, and dusting the fans (which i do regularly). Also it is seemingly random, It could last all day, or 5 minutes before it shuts off.

What do you guys think?

So what's the problem here again? Does it give you an error before shutting down?

You seem to have two antivirus programs here - etrust and Norton. Remove one - I assume that etrust wasn't removed completely from the way it looks here.

A:Help - computer shutting down

First welcome. This is a "technical" forum, and most people here are "technical". For the most part, what we really want to do is help to solve your problem. So a lot of "social" or "conversational" communication is not ony not helpful to solve your computer issues, but they can be a distraction and an impediment. Your problem will get solved if you are patient and don't give up. So, while at one level the "smiliey's" are appreciated etc..., it would be best to limit your communication to just facts. This includes the (text) wailing "HHEEEELLLP!" and other distracting and (sometimes) annoying things that novice Users do.

Please define exactly what you mean by "strange". What does it either do or not do ?

I guessed that perhaps it was topped up to the brim with not an ounce of space to spare for the startup process,

Do you mean your HD is filled to capacity, or your memory is inadequate for the processes you are using? Or both ?

but I have been reading about the Sasser worm virus, and I am wondering if that is my problem.

Unless an AV program told you that you have this virus, chances are that it is NOT your problem. There are literally thousands (if not millions) of possible causes to your computer problems at this time. It is not a good idea to "seize" one explanation without good reason.

It is obvious that you are failry inexperienced with computers, and this means that in order for you to provide the information we need to help you, you are probably going to have to learn more about your computer than you do right now. Communication is very important, so you are probably going to have to learn some new words and what they mean.

First, what Anti-Virus program are you using ? Is it recently updated ? When was the last time you ran a scan ? When you scan, are you scanning the whole system ?

Do you have a firewall and is it enabled ?

Please list your basic system specs. These include, but are not limited to
CPU, Motherboard, RAM, Power Supply and any other peripheral devices.

Do you connect to the internet via modem, cable or DSL ? Are you on a network ?

when I click on an icon (within 60 seconds) it displays a message saying that the file is missing or corrupt

It would be very useful if you could copy an exact transcript of this error message and paste it into your next post.

At some point, we are probably going to have to try to get you into "Safe Mode", so as long as you are reading about computer stuff, it would be a good idea for you to become familiar with that and how to do it.

I generally leave my computer on all the time but this weekend I decided to shut it off because I would not be home for a couple days. Now I turn it on and it boots and stays on around ninety seconds or so and then just turns off. I have recently installed several new programs (and successfully rebooted each time) and have had no real problems other than a little bit of internet lag. The information I have found on the subject suggests that its a temperature issue but I removed the side panel and opened my window to considerably cool the room. I got the same results. It doesn't stay on long enough to do much in the way or scanning or downloading help. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice on the issue. I am honestly at a loss.

Have you checked to make sure the heatsink on the CPU is properly attached and not broken? You may also have a failed power supply, try swapping in another one from a working computer.

Ok so i have a PC here. It won't shutdown correctly.

It hangs when you click shutdown. It doesn't hang like this:

shutdown -> choose method -> hang

it hangs like this:

click shutdown -> hang

Here's the kicker.

It will shutdown fine if it's only been on for a few minutes, even after being fully booted and using a few programs.

But after an extended period of time, it will hang when clicking shutdown...

any ideas? It doesn't even bring up the shutdown menu, just hangs when i click shutdown...

Yesterday I have upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista. Everything works fine apart from the fact that the computer randomly shuts itself down. My laptop used to have heating problems before but no so often... like 5 hours after installing Windows 7 yesterday, my laptop had shut itself down 3 times already.
What could be causing this problem and how can I fix it?
Also, forgive me as I am new on the forums and I'm not sure if this is the right section for this thread.
Thanks a lot for your help

A:Computer shutting down by itself

Check event viewer for any entries at the time the shutdowns occured also check scheduled tasks, also you could try installing some temperature monitoring software to keep an eye on the internals - something like speccy or cpu-z

For some reason lately my computer has just been shutting down on its own. I leave it alone for a while and it will either be frozen and I have to restart it or it has restarted itself and comes to a black screen in the middle of loading things saying system error boot enter system disk. Now I tried putting in the Windows XP disk but it is not working. And if I press restart from there it will keep giving me the same error message. I have to turn the computer completly off for a second then turn it back on for it to work. Sometimes I will catch it saying physical dump of memory.

I have tried running Norton and spyware programs but nothing is making it go away. Any help would be wonderful. I am stuck and don't want to have to get another computer.

Thanks,

Steph
